Essential Settings for WordPress Website

This guide will show you how to setup website title, email and comments.

General Settings

Go to Dashboard, Settings, General and in ‘Site Title’ type your website name (ie. ‘YourDomain.com’). If one of your website’s page name is ‘Social Media Benefits’, then the title displayed in the search results will be ‘Social Media Benefits – YourDomain.com’.

In ‘Tagline’ type what your company is about (ie ‘Marketing for Business). This text will appear on your website plus also in the search results for your main page (ie ‘Marketing for Business – YourDomain.com’). In both ‘WordPress Address (URL)’ and ‘Site Address (URL)’ enter your website address with ‘www’ before (ie ‘http://www.YourDomain.com’). Enable also ‘Anyone can register’ in the ‘Membership’ field. In ‘Timezone’ select a city near you. Then click ‘Save Changes’.

Writing Settings

In Dashboard, Settings, Writing, set the emailing parameters that Bluehost gave you (during installation and by email) or follow the Bluehost Email Setup Guide I made.

To complete configuration for the contact form, go to Dashboard, click ‘Settings’, click ‘Writing’, change ‘Mail Server’ to ‘mail.yourdomain.com’, change ‘Login Name’ to your Bluehost email address and insert in the ‘password’ field your Bluehost email login password (or your Bluehost login password). Then in your Website, click the menu ‘Contact Us’ and test sending an email message to your personal email address.

Reading Settings

In Dashboard, Settings, Reading, in ‘Front page displays’ enable/tick ‘A Static Page (Select Below)’ and for ‘Front page:’ select ‘What we offer’ page so that this will be your home page content. In ‘Search Engine Visibility ‘ disable/untick ‘Discourage search engines from indexing this site’ (Don’t forget that). In ‘Related posts’, enable ‘Use a large and visually striking layout’. Then click ‘Save Changes’.

Discussion Settings

In Dashboard, Settings, Discussion in ‘Default article settings’, enable the options ‘Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article, enable ‘Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks) on new articles’, enable ‘Allow people to post comments on new articles’. In the section ‘Other comment settings’, enable ‘Comment author must fill out the name and email’, uncheck ‘Users must be registered and logged in to comment’. In the section ‘Email me whenever’, enable ‘Anyone posts a comment’ and enable ‘A comment is held for moderation’. In the section ‘Before a comment appears’, enable ‘Comment must be manually approved’ and enable ‘Comment author must have a previously approved comment’. In Default Avatar, select ‘Wavatar’. Click ‘Save Changes’.

Permalinks Settings

In Dashboard, Settings, Permalinks, in the section ‘Common Settings’, enable ‘Custom Structure’ (Very Important) and insert this in the white field in the right: /%category%/%postname%/
Save changes. This is very important SEO setup to increase your visitors coming from search results.

User Settings

In Dashboard, Users, click your user profile and in next windows complete all empty fields (if possible). In ‘Proofreading’ enable ‘a post or page is first published’ and ‘a post or page is updated’. Don’t generate password. Then click in the bottom ‘Update Profile’.
