Backlinks Research for Websites- A Simple Guide

How to make Backlinks Research and Link Building

Link building is a part of website SEO efforts to increase traffic. The main link types are inbound links (backlinks), outbound links and interlinking. The creation of backlinks is very important to increase a website’s significance and therefore ranking in search engines (i.e. traffic increase). Backlinks are links from other website’s pointing to your website page.

Outbound links are links from your website page to another website page. If a backlink is from a trusted/quality website page, then this will act as recognition to search engines that your website page is important and of quality (i.e. useful for readers). That will increase its ranking in search engines (if proper {keywords research} is done).
All links are recommended to be related with a relevant webpage.

So, if a webpage/article is about ‘Link Building’, then it should ideally have backlinks from a website page related to link building. The same principle applies for outbound links. It’s important to have at least quite a few high quality backlinks (high page authority). Except outbound and inbound links, it’s also important to interlink your website pages to pass significance from an important related webpage/article to another.

What to Consider when Linking

  • One backlink from a ‘trusted authority’ website is much more important than many links for low authority website.
  • If you eventually have many low authority backlinks, then it’s much harder to remove them. So select backlinks carefully. Since you cannot always have control who will link to you, you can use Google Disavow tool to remove backlink influence (not an easy process and can affect your website traffic).
  • When creating an outbound link, use relevant text linked to a relevant webpage/article.
  • Make outbound links with ‘_blank’ attribute. This way they will open in another browser tab to avoid losing your visitor. While converting a text in a link, select from WordPress link the relevant option ‘_blank’ attribute’.
  • Interlinking. Give the possibility to the visitor to check more related articles to stay longer in the website and to increase conversion (newsletter signup or sale). When they stay longer, that will give signals to search engines that your article is good and your webpage will be ranked higher. By interlinking you also pass ‘juice’ from a significant page to a less significant (or newer) page. Thus, this will increase its ranking too. Interlink by using proper text keywords for a link. Don’t overdo linking since that might not be pleasant to readers.
  • External Linking. Link to authority websites to increase your website credibility to search engines. Use a nofollow tag in such link in your post to avoid passing your link significance (link juice) to potentially bad sites. Use MozBar Chrome extension to find link quality (domain/page authority) of websites.
  • Have links to webpages with a lot of social media shares.
  • A Webpage ranking is influenced by social media engagement (i.e. retweets, shares). Twitter profiles with authority affect shared links and thus ranking.
  • It’s good to point out that high quality original articles can offer a natural link growth since reader will share it (Google’s opinion).
  • Seriously avoid buying backlinks.
